How a ship “woke up” after 100 years on the seabed and what extraordinary story it revealed — “100 Years of Silence” follows the scientific investigation into the steamboat Mopang, whose leaking fuel triggered ecological risks and threatened the tourist season. The film searches for answers: what an American vessel was doing in the Black Sea, how it struck a mine between two wars, and whether other shipwrecks pose similar environmental dangers. The author Maria Cherneva and cinematographer Anna Andreeva undertake an extensive investigation — from U.S. government archives to diving down to the wreck. The result is an adventurous narrative uncovering that the ship is the only preserved vessel from a significant U.S. governmental program created in response to Germany’s submarine warfare.
