A film about Binka Zhelyazkova, the first female film director in Bulgaria, and her outstanding life in cinema. During her forty-year career, Zhelyazkova experienced disappointment with Communism, the coarseness of totalitarian censorship, and the drama of her banned films. Nevertheless, her films reached audiences far beyond Bulgaria, at such renowned film festivals as those in Cannes and Moscow. Following her footsteps in Bulgarian and world cinema, the story seeks to break the silence surrounding Binka after 1989 and bring us closer to this exceptional woman and filmmaker.

ELKA NIK0L0VA graduated in Media Studies in 2001 from The New School University in New York. In 1995, she co-directed the documentary, ‘The Warmth of My Home’, part of the MOMA video collection in New York. She also produced and directed two short films, ‘Prelude to Yesterday’ and ‘My Mother Wore Pink’. In 2003, she began developing the concept of a documentary about Binka Zhelyaskova. Nikolova’s latest documentary is titled ‘A Question of Survival’.
