Frank Thompson was sent to Bulgaria in 1944 to coordinate British intelligence and the Bulgarian partisans, but was captured and shot. In Bulgaria, he was first declared a hero, then a British spy and, a few years later, once again a hero. In Britain, he was forgotten.
